A Rare Aerial & Ground Photography Experience

Imagine photographing the vast scale and intricate patterns of Central Australia - not only from the ground, but from the air - alongside world-renowned photographer Ken Duncan.

This is not just another photography tour.

It is an exceptionally rare opportunity to experience the Australian outback from multiple perspectives - walking on Country, sharing culture with First Nations people, and flying above some of the world’s most remote and spectacular desert landscapes.

Outback Exposure Tour #2 has been designed for photographers seeking something truly extraordinary. Over seven unforgettable days, you will experience iconic locations, meaningful cultural connection, and three full hours of helicopter flying across the Western Desert region of the Northern Territory.

A large part of the expense of this tour is due to the remote location.  To get a helicopter from Alice Springs to Haasts Bluff and back again, requires over 4 hours of flying time, plus the cost of getting fuel out to Haasts Bluff.  If you tried to do this yourself, the cost would be many times what you’ll be paying for this tour.

Photograph the Outback from the Air

A defining feature of Outback Exposure Tour #2 is its inclusion of extended helicopter photography time — an opportunity few photographers ever experience. To have a chopper in this remote area is really unique. And the small number of participants means that each passenger will have perfect visibility.

Across two dedicated days, you’ll take to the skies for a series of carefully planned flights, capturing sweeping aerial views of:

  • The West MacDonnell Ranges

  • The Centipede Range

  • The Caterpillar Formation near Glen Helen

  • Gosse Bluff

  • Remote desert formations near Kings Canyon

  • The region around Haasts Bluff and Papunya

Flying with doors off, these flights offer extraordinary opportunities to photograph scale, texture, pattern, and light from perspectives impossible to access on foot.

This tour will only proceed once all 5 places are filled, ensuring the experience remains intimate, flexible, and safe for aerial photography.

Discover Places Hidden from the Crowds

As with all Outback Exposure journeys, this is not a standard outback itinerary.

Ken will guide you to remote locations and sacred landscapes rarely visited by travellers — places he has photographed and returned to over decades, often through long-standing relationships with Indigenous custodians of the land.

But Ken will also take you to new areas that have not been photographed at all yet.  In essence, you will be discovering them with Ken.  Combined with aerial access, these locations offer a depth and diversity of photographic opportunity that is truly exceptional.

Learn Directly from a Master Photographer

Imagine having Ken Duncan beside you - on the ground and in the air - as you photograph the outback.

With just 5 participants, this tour offers an exceptionally personalised experience. Ken will work closely with you throughout the journey, sharing practical guidance, creative insight, and thoughtful feedback to help you refine both your technique and your artistic vision.

Whether you are capturing expansive aerial panoramas, intimate cultural moments, or dramatic desert light, you’ll benefit at every step from Ken’s decades of experience.

Drone Photography

Drones cannot be flown in Ormiston Gorge or Standley Chasm, but are permitted in most of the other locations you will visit on this tour.

Connect Deeply with Culture

While Outback Exposure Tour #2 includes extraordinary aerial elements, it remains grounded in meaningful cultural engagement. You will spend time with local Indigenous Elders and knowledge holders, sharing meals and learning about their deep connection to Country. Your experiences will include bush tucker and bush medicine foraging, traditional cooking, and visits to respected local art centre - offering insight into one of the world’s oldest continuing cultures.

This balance of culture, landscape, and adventure is central to the Outback Exposure philosophy..

Designed by Photographers, for Photographers

This experience is built entirely around the needs of photographers. The schedule remains flexible to follow the light, allowing for extended sunrise and sunset sessions, spontaneous stops, and time to process and discuss your images. Dedicated downtime is built in to review work with Ken, refine edits, and reflect on the journey.

From sweeping aerial vistas to vast night skies, every day offers the potential to create extraordinary images. As conditions allow, there may also be opportunities for astro photography.

Your All-Inclusive Outback Adventure

Your journey begins in Alice Springs, with an overnight stay in town before heading west.

On your way to Haasts Bluff, you’ll visit iconic locations including Standley Chasm and Ormiston Gorge, before continuing by comfortable 4-WD into the heart of the outback.

Your tour investment includes:

  • Accommodation in Alice Springs

  • Rustic but comfortable accommodation at the Creative Technologies Centre, Haasts Bluff

  • All meals as detailed in the detailed itinerary

  • Three full hours of helicopter flying across two days

  • Expert guidance from Ken Duncan throughout the tour

  • Personalised photography instruction and feedback

  • All on-ground transport in air-conditioned 4-WD vehicles

  • Access to exclusive, little-known locations

  • Meaningful cultural experiences with local Indigenous communities

Limited Places — This Tour Will Sell Out

With only five places available, Outback Exposure Tour #2 is one of the most exclusive photographic experiences Ken has ever offered.

This tour will only proceed once all 5 places are filled, and it is unlikely to be repeated in this format.

If you are seeking a truly rare opportunity to combine aerial photography, cultural connection, and remote desert landscapes, this is an experience like no other.
